Who remembers this?

Many moons ago there used to be the PDC website where there were tons of downloadable .vfc planeskins done by artists way better than me. I was inspired to do historically realistic skins by these artists. Did these old files get archived? Maybe we can resurrect the best of them into the PPV folder or replace the poor quality default skins in the current updates.

As far as I know, many of them were already rescued and feature in the game as PPV skins already.

I agree with you that many of the "defaults" are low-res and should be replaced.

For example - I'm working on a range of PPV skins for the mosquito.
As part of this, the default skin for the NFII, BIV and FB6 will all be binned and replaced with new high-res ones.

Great!

K4 needs a good one (former pdc had one or two nice ones).
B-25H really needs a decent one also (plus a pannable cockpit...).

The Heinkel could need another one, also.
Maybe a nice desert or winter sceme...

Post subject:  Re: New Heinkel He-111

Onisan, are you CLAIRVOYANT?

I am in the process of making a couple of skins
for the He-111 and I have comments for anyone
who might know more, preferably a Luftwaffe bomber
expert member.

On the Heinkel, there are ports on the side of the
fuselage. These are used for guns, I think. On the
model in the game, there are 4 on each side of
the plane and only the fourth one has a gun
sticking out. I was wondering if the other ports
are for guns too? Are they also used as windows
and do they have glass? I have seen some plastic
He-111 models with only 2 open ports and they are
windows with glass, the other two ports are not
open and appear to be doors that can be opened
or not.

Anyway, my question is not related to the above
except that I would like my Heinkel to look perfect.

I have experimented in the past with what I call "glossy glass"
(also it could be described as "smokey glass").
It works through a setting in the code for the plane model.
It shows up great using the old graphics game
before we got the new shiny planes of the new
graphics engine in the game now. The "glossy glass"
does not show up in the current game.
Does anyone know why the glass cockpits in
Warbirds 2018 do not show up looking like
realistic glass? Instead, the cockpits and glass areas
show up as clear for the most part, no reflectance to
speak of.

See my example skins below:

RAAF Camo (see bottom 3 screens)
http://www.iart7.com/WARBIRDS/gallery28e.html

Big Beautiful Doll (see glossy glass)
http://www.iart7.com/WARBIRDS/gallery28d.html

What do you think? Can the current game graphics
engine be fixed?

<S> Iart7! Nice initiative, sir!
Btw something I believe is missing in the game is a Hurricane Mk. I skin for the heroic Polish No. 303 fighter squadron that flew the Hawkers in the Battle of Britain, and was the highest scoring Hurricane squadron for the Royal Airforce. Their leading role in defending Britain was nearly censored due to diplomatic relations with Russia, but their deeds have been brought to the light since then.

Regarding the four front windows of the Heinkel 111 the answer is yes and no, as it was fully optional to either fly with the windows fully closed, to only have the small circular windows open (with glass of course) or to have the full square windows open (with glass). It might have depended on the payload the Heinkel was carrying, since these windows are placed at the bomb chamber.

Regarding the port and starboard guns, Warbirds has it wrong. In the game both side-guns are placed at the rearmost windows. In reality though only the Port gun was at the left side window furthest back, while the starboard gun was at the second right side window, counting from the rear. All windows had glass, with a small opening only where the guns protrude.

Agreed on the Polish skin. I have THE 303 Kościuszko skin for the Vb Supermarine. As an honor to both the RL group, and to the squad we had here long ago.

I would love to do a skin for the Hurricane Mk1 303 squadron.
I'll start on it as soon as I finish the desert camo He-111.
